Advocacy in Action: Dawn Comstock serves as Expert Panelist at the White House

On May 29th, 2014 SAVIR member Dr. Dawn Comstock from the Colorado School of Public Health and the Pediatric Injury Prevention, Education, and Research (PIPER) Program was invited to participate in the White House Healthy Kids and Safe Sports Concussion Summit as an expert panelist discussing the epidemiology of sports and recreation related concussions among U.S. Youth. The audience invited to attend this event held in the East Room of the White House included leaders from the research, clinical, and public health fields as well as sports governing bodies, policy makers, grass-roots organizations, parent groups, and families of injured athletes. This highlights how injury research can be used to inform the public discourse and future policy-making. Congratulations Dawn!

PCORI and NIH To Announce Major Study to Prevent Fall-Related Injuries

PCORI and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health will announce on Wednesday, June 4, the selection of the research team that will carry out a major, five-year, $30 million patient-centered study of the effectiveness of individually tailored care plans to help older individuals avoid falls and related injuries. Every year, roughly one in three older Americans suffers a fall. Although evidence points to effective ways to prevent falls, rates of fall-related injury remain stubbornly high, making falls one of the most common causes of disability and loss of independence among older adults. Details of the new national study and perspectives of key stakeholders, including patients, caregivers, and clinicians, will be shared at a one-hour public briefing via webinar/teleconference, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. ET. Register for the event.
